Taking off from the picture above and one more personal tweet "Have come to appreciate #Couture ... It is truely liberating for a designer and the viewer! Creativity undiluted."
There is always a conflict while designing a certain product between the Artist and Designer inside me. As a belief, Design is for the User to be worn/ used/ interacted with- adding value. Art is an integral part of design but may not serve functionally but is engaging to one or more senses- sometimes purely creative and indulgent.
Currently the Couture weeks are doing rounds internationally and turn out quite awe-inspiring to look at as pure art. Their Pret-a-porter counterparts do not look so fabulous and inspiring as they mainly are targeted towards buyers eventually. Commerce is a driving force there and thus coming back to my work...
There has to be that one big piece that is organic and designed such that no one may ever wear. But it has to be done to fuel the other less interesting ones. Because from experience, the moment the starting point is plainly 'selling', creative blocks are formed immediately. Highly undesirable and frustrating!
Ending on one more tweet "Creativity & Commerce should not exist in the same space *'ideally'!"
*Difficult but imperative
