Impactful,but I'm not awed,neither do I think it's too much of a niche film.But DhobiGhat has a bigger purpose:establish Prateik- DONE! :)
As Mumbai Diaries, the film works well. What at times does not work is the awkward actors in the form of Monica Dogra and as someone did mention Amir Khan. As a painter, he has tried to perfect the angst, the unconventional lifestyle, but tries too hard. Perhaps a faceless actor would have helped here as well. I do not think Prateik stumbles even once, and the only smiles/laughs in the audience were brought about by him. Not due to any antics, but his genuine reactions as the naive (a little refined) dhobi.
The locations definitely are a highlight. The film is not smooth throughout. It does seem to go nowehere at times. However, it ends powerfully as the characters come to a common emotional point and lead on from there. Nice, different for Indian Mainstream, but the 'I liked, not for everyone' reviews still seem a little fake and strange.
As the best film on Mumbai and it's layers? I guess the slot is still empty.
